A feasibility study is an important part of the pre-planning that leads to a successful capital campaign.  In this edition of Transforming Challenges, Senior Consultants Tom Reid and Greg Cascione outline the steps you need to take for a feasibility study that will give you the information you need.

10 Steps to a Successful Feasibility Study

If your organization is considering a capital campaign or another major funding initiative, it’s a good idea to conduct a feasibility study first. Done well, a feasibility study can not only tell you how much money you can raise, but also give you valuable information about attitudes toward your organization and its mission.

Here are 10 steps to take to ensure you get what you need out of a feasibility study:

  1. Build consensus among your organization’s leadership for the specific project you want to raise money for (e.g., to endow, build, expand, renovate).

  2. Determine if you can conduct the study in-house or if you need outside help. Can you be objective enough or provide enough confidentiality if you do it yourselves? For organizations to do the work in-house, they need to have had steady leadership over the past several years and have engaged in at least one capital campaign. One advantage of using an outside consultant is that people take you-and the study-more seriously.
  3. Develop the case for support. Tell the emotional story, both of your organization’s mission and how this project fits into it.
  4. Establish the deliverables of the study:
    • Attitudes toward your organization among your supporters and the wider community
    • The level of support for the project in general
    • Suggestions for campaign leadership
    • The level of financial support for the project
    • Availability of volunteers for a campaign
    • The readiness/capability of the organization to staff a campaign
  5. Identify the people to be interviewed. Using your organization’s database, identify 40-60 individuals with a record of giving and/or who have influence in the community, with the idea of actually interviewing 30-40.
  6. Draft the letter inviting people to be interviewed.
  7. Develop the questions to be asked in the interview.
  8. Conduct the interviews, ideally in person. These are one-on-one, confidential sessions that usually take 45-60 minutes.
  9. Compile the report, including interview results, action recommendations and an outline of a campaign plan if a campaign is found to be feasible.
  10. Present the report in person to the organization’s leadership (Board, staff) and provide a copy to the interviewees.
