- The Diocese of Trenton is fully engaged in Faith in Our Future, the diocesan-wide planning process involving all 107 of its parishes. The diocese has prepared an excellent informational resource on Faith in Our Future and how it complements the diocesan fund development initiative Faith to Move Mountains. You can find this resource along with a video message from Bishop David O’Connell on the diocesan web site.
- The Sisters of St. Anne of Marlborough, MA have invited Maureen Gallagher and John Reid to assist them with the initial implementation of their Strategic Plan which was completed in December 2015.
- Maureen Gallagher has been hired to work with designated Congregations of Religious Women in Leadership Conference of Women Religious Region IX (Wisconsin) to facilitate and design processes for collaborative planning for the future.
- Lucien Roy is conducting a search for a Director of Campus Ministry for Alvernia University in Reading, PA.
- Tom Reid will facilitate the All Ministry Gathering organized by the California Catholic Conference in Burlingame, CA on Feb. 2-4.

Make this a Happy New Year for Your Team
Here’s a New Year’s resolution for you: resolve to make this year actually a happy New Year for the teams that work in your organization.
Why should leaders care about whether or not their employee teams are “happy?” Because much research shows a positive work experience builds performance and thus benefits the organization. However, as Lawrence Miller, on his Management Meditations blog, says: “Most senior executives are more concerned with the structures of senior management than they are with the structure of people at work at the front line. Changing structures at the top does little to impact organization performance. The quality of life, the way people behave toward each other, at the first level is very likely to determine organization performance.”
That quality of life, or social capital as Miller calls it, is an important contributor to employee satisfaction: “Where employees have close bonds to their teams they are most likely to derive satisfaction from their work. It is here where continuous improvement is most critical and becomes embedded in the culture.” Among the characteristics of high-performing teams Miller names are “strong social bonds or trust within the team,” “they communicate openly, honestly and frequently,” and “they celebrate success together and work to improve together.”
And just as many leaders are more concerned with the structure and workings of top management than with employee teams, they are also less interested in dedicating organizational resources to developing teams and increasing quality of life (or happiness)-to the possible detriment of the organization itself.
In addition to the intangible “happiness” benefit of team development, there are also tangible costs to ignoring dysfunctional teams:
- Excessive employee turnover
- Increased absenteeism
- Reduced productivity
- Quality problems
- Delayed and missed deadlines
In short, as Lawrence Miller says, everyone wins when we build strong teams at work. And in the process, leaders ensure a happy New Year all around.
