Many times when engaging in a strategic planning process, participants want to just dive right in and outline goals and strategies to get where they want to go.  In this edition of Transforming Challenges, Senior Consultant  John Reid advises taking a more comprehensive view and begin with the end in mind.

  • Happy New Year!  We are pleased to note that the beginning of 2015 marks the midway point in our 18 years of helping leaders and organizations transform challenges into opportunities to create a better world.
  • In the Archdiocese of New York, Cardinal Dolan has announced his decisions about merging and collaborating parishes which concludes the first phase of their planning process, Making All Things New.  The Reid Group is working with the Archdiocese as its 368 parishes move into the implementation phase.
  • John Reid is working with Fr. John Hurley, a Paulist priest, on a planning process for Sacred Heart parish in Bellevue WA.  John and Carol Guenther will co-facilitate a parish mission focused on the theme of the parish plan:  Hearts on Fire (Following Jesus, Inviting participation, Renewing community, Exploring the future)
  • Maureen Gallagher has a new planning contract with the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth in Des Plaines IL.

Your Plan for 2015:  Begin with the End in Mind

“Hey, we just want a strategic plan. You know, something that lays out our strategy for operations in the next 2-3 years. It should be fast and easy. So why do we have to waste our time ‘discerning our vision’ and ‘articulating our values?'”

We hear this often from some of our clients. Or rather, we don’t hear it so much as we feel it in the resistance they have to spending time on the organization’s mission, vision and values when they are embarking on a planning process. However, it is hard to map out a plan for moving forward if you don’t know where you want to go. That requires starting with those “big picture” issues of mission and values and vision. And the process doesn’t end there–it needs then to go on to identify the actions necessary to make the vision a reality as well as a timeframe to complete the action step and an indication of who is responsible for seeing that the work is finished with quality.

When we talk with clients about a planning process, we like to break it down into four types of planning:

  • Directional planning: mission, vision and values
  • Strategic planning: goals
  • Operational planning: objectives and action steps
  • Administrative planning: monitoring day-to-day actions

To be effective, the planning process needs to involve all four types of planning, in a process that pairs the organization’s vision with specific, concrete action. Both are necessary ingredients for a plan that can truly take your organization where you want to go.

So, begin your planning process with the end in mind: a focused organization that is

  • confident about where it is headed
  • building on its past
  • cognizant of the strengths and struggles of the present
  • ready for the challenges of the future

Sound like a plan? Then, plan your work and then work your plan. Happy 2015!
